Our History

A Tradition of Service

This law firm began in 1949 as Cunningham, Thomson and Thomson, and has continued to represent clients in Lindsay and the surrounding area to this date. The firm Evolved to Thomson, Scott and Logan in 1974, following the appointment of the Honourable David M. Thomson to the Ontario Superior Court. Justice Thomson was joined by the Honourable David H. Logan in 1981, who was also appointed to the Ontario Superior Court.

Subsequent to the appointment of Justice Logan, the firm moved forward as Glass, Farn, and Reynolds. The firm proceeded under this name until 1997, when the Honourable Bruce A. Glass was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court. With its offices at its present location since 1960, the firm carried on as Gemmill, Farn and Reynolds until the passing of David Gemmill and retirement of Ivan Reynolds – both after distinguished careers of 40 plus years.

Commencing 2019 the firm merged with Johnston & Johnston LLP and progressed under the banner of Gemmill, Johnston & Jeffries LLP. We are now Gemmill, Johnston Jeffries PC.

We are the longest established law firm in the Kawartha Lakes, and look forward to evolving with our growing community.

Raymond Gemmill

Raymond attended Bond University located on the Gold Coast of Australia, where he graduated with Honours from the Juris Doctor (JD) program.

Prior to Law School, Raymond was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University.

Called to the Bar in 2010, Raymond transitioned from articling student at our firm to seasoned practitioner.

Raymond’s core areas of practice include Criminal, Real Estate and Wills & Estate work. While adept at finding practical, cost effective solutions to a given issue – Raymond also has considerable trial experience when your situation calls for representation in court.

Raymond can be found enjoying time his wife Jen and their three sons when he is not in the office.

Jarret Johnston

Jarret graduated from Fenelon Falls Secondary School as class Valedictorian in 2002 and then obtained his Honours B.A at the University of Guelph. Jarret then attended Law School at the University of Windsor, his father’s alma mater, earning his Juris Doctor in 2012. Jarret then returned home to the Kawartha Lakes to live and commence his articles with Susan N. Peel and his father, Timothy W. Johnston. Jarret practices primarily in Family Law specializing in litigation, collaborative, and traditional settlement work. Jarret also offers services in Wills and Estates, and Real Estate. Jarret is the President of the Kawartha Lakes (Victoria-Haliburton) Law Association and an Executive on the Board for the Kawartha Collaborative Practice. He has acted as a Director for the Children’s Services Council and spoken at several provincial, national, and international Collaborative conferences and seminars. Jarret’s wife, Megan, practices law as well in the Greater Toronto Area, while they raise their three young children together. Jarret is passionate about getting his clients the best result possible with the least amount of financial, mental, and emotional damage, whether in the boardroom or courtroom.

Blake Jeffries

Blake was raised in the City of Kawartha Lakes. He studied Business and Political Science at Brock University and Glasgow Caledonia University during his undergraduate, and obtained his law degree from Leeds University. Blake has developed his practice with an intention to be skilled and effective in areas where people in our community most often interact with lawyers: family law, real estate law and criminal law, with plans to develop his practice to assist with estate planning. On a case by case basis Blake will also provide legal advice and assistance in general contract drafting and landlord tenant issues. Blake brings a distinctive work ethic to his practice and is an effective oral and written advocate for his clients. Blake has a considerable amount of in-court and trial experience, and has developed a reputation as a reasonable, principled, and practical lawyer. Blake believes that access to justice is important and part of a lawyer’s responsibility to their community, he has continued to reserve part of his practice to assist legally aided clients in family and criminal law. Blake also works closely with Women’s Resources Kawartha Lakes to assist vulnerable people within our community.

Blake resides in the Kawartha Lakes with his wife Arianna and daughter.

Shawn McNamara

Shawn

Shawn graduated from McMaster University with a B.A. in 1987 and an M.A. in Classics in 1989. He received his law degree (LLB) from the University of Western Ontario in 1994, and has been practising law since 1996, at first in Hamilton, his hometown, and since 2001 in Lindsay. Shawn was supervisory duty counsel from 2001 until 2004 assisting unrepresented clients in criminal and family court. After 2002, Shawn returned to private practice. Shawn has a general practice, concentrating in Real Estate, Wills and Estates, Civil Litigation, Criminal Defence and Family Law. Shawn is a past President of the Kawartha Haliburton Law Association. Shawn’s goal in his litigation and family practice is client-oriented, seeking always to achieve the best result with the least cost and aggravation to his clients.
